Health & Safety Training in Edinburgh and the Lothians

Health and Safety training

Introduction

Companies, charities, and other organisations often lack the time, expertise or other resources to be able provide Health and Safety Training internally. We are able to provide Manual Handling courses to Edinburgh and the surrounding area, including East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. We can provide these training courses on your premises, on our premises in Eskbank just outside Edinburgh or a combination of the two.

We can be flexible to your needs regarding the organisation of events. We are able to provide courses at the weekend or in the evening or of course during normal working hours, depending on your operational requirements.

Manual Handling Training

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 require that employers both provide employees with manual handling training and insure that they are competent.

Midlothian Physiotherapy can ensure that you comply with the above legislation by providing Manual Handling training which covers the required theoretical underpinnings and a practical component where participants are taught and assessed performing an appropriate task or tasks. We provide both Object and People Manual Handling courses.

For both types of Manual Handling training we would discuss your needs prior to delivering the training session and then tailor the content of the course to the specific needs of you, the needs of the organisation and the needs of your staff.

For example when training refuse collectors for a local authority, we arranged a site visit where we looked at the tasks that the staff had to carry out. The line manager organising the training discussed with us the tasks he felt were particularly relevant. The practical component of the course was then tailored to the needs of the organisation, in this case manoeuvering large waste bins to refuse trucks. This meant that we were able to pre-empt any issues that could potentially have become contentious.

We provide Manual Handling training for people handling to an independent nursing care provider on an ongoing monthly basis and have done for several years now. We don’t just teach what is required from the syllabus. We discuss on going issues with the management team and the care staff and then tailor the session to address those issues. During the practical sessions the staff are always asked if there are any particular issues that they want to discuss or address.

As we have been providing the training for some time now, often staff are returning for their yearly refresher training. This is a good opportunity to assess how useful previous advice regarding specific situations has been and to suggest different ideas if necessary. We aim to foster an open and transparent environment when carrying out manual handling training so that staff feel that they are able to ask questions and offer opinions without feeling that they will be judged adversely.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss your requirements.
