What we’ve been up to – Manual handling and Know pain CPD

Health and Safety training

What we've been up to - Manual handling day and Know pain seminarThe physio’s at Midlothian Physiotherapy LLP take CPD or Continuing Professional Development seriously. As we want to ensure that we continue to deliver the best customer service, physiotherapy treatment, and training experience available in Edinburgh and the surrounding area. In addition to it being a requirement of being registered with the HCPC and being members of the CSP.

Therefore this month Alistair attended a seminar about pain at Craiglockhart in Edinburgh and how to best manage it; and Kevin attended a manual handling training study day at the Western General Infirmary in Edinburgh.

Know pain seminar

The Know pain seminar was organised by the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine. Alistair is a member of the association and as it was being held locally at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre in Edinburgh, thought it would be good to attend.

The presenter was Mike Stewart a clinical specialist physiotherapist who specialises in educating patients and healthcare professionals about pain, the perception of pain and how to influence some of the behaviours that affect the perception of pain. This evidence based approach demonstrated that many factors influence pain perception and that pain is not just a neurophysiological phenomenon (i.e. a response to an injury or external stimulus) but is affected by several factors including our environment, culture and perceptions. This approach is something that would not be used on it’s own, but instead is combined with other approaches to increase their effectiveness.

Scottish Manual Handling Forum study day

Kevin attended a Scottish Manual Handling Forum study day held at the Western General in Edinburgh. He is a member of the forum as it is the main grouping of health and social care professionals involved in manual handling training in Scotland.

The study day was attended by a mix of professions including nurses, OTs, physiotherapists and paramedics. They attended from all over Scotland including the Borders, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen and worked in a range of different settings including the private sector, public sector and charitable sector. It was both interesting and good to see that attitudes, knowledge and opinions regarding manual handling showed little divergence amongst these three at times quite different groups.

At the study day we benchmarked two manual handling risk assessment tools(REBA and QEC). Following this, we then used these two tools plus some other questionnaires to evaluate 4 slide sheet techniques as part of a larger piece of work being undertaken for the National Back Exchange. The  National Back Exchange is the UK wide professional group of those involved in manual handling training, risk assessment etc. Kevin is also a member of this group
